Artist's Comments

OK, now here is a better quality shot of the baby snow leopard. This one is the boy so it must be *Allerlei
Again an ISO of 1600, I don't seem to have much luck getting the perfect shot of the baby leopards. Thanks to =apomaniac for showing me how to reduce the noise a little, it seems to have worked :)

Pic taken at Melbourne Zoo. Print available upon request.

Enjoy :)

Thanks to *woxys =kat1e- and ~BurnedSnow for their critique
I have put a bit more contrast and highlighted the eyes. I didn't want to over do it, hope you call all notice the difference :aww:

From personal experience, cubs tend to get an automatic thumbs-up just for the cute factor. When it comes to a critique, we have to put aside the obvious and look a little closer.

Vision - Pretty good. We have an interesting subject seemingly chilling out in the grass. Almost any exotic creature can give potential for a great capture.

Originality - As an accomplished photographer you need to be able to set yourself apart from the standard, run of the mill photography. This is a zoo shot, so what sets it apart from the thousands of other people that will no doubt take a photograph? Simple, you've approached it from a different angle and got down close to your subjects level. This, coupled with the extended focal range sets this far above what the majority of photographers will achieve. That said, the pose is a little uniform, there are no doubt thousands upon thousands of similar shots out there, why? Because he's not moving. Catching him interacting with another cat or an object in some way, now that will be far more original.

Technique - The ISO is rather high. I assume this is to compensate for having a faster shutter speed. Now others have mentioned touchups can be made in photoshop. Sure, but that aside, you'd get a much better result and an easier time if you'd utilised a tripod, especially as your subject is still. This would allow you to use a slower shutter speed and bring that ISO right down. Noise would be reduced and you may well have had an even sharper capture.

Impact - Obvious cuteness aside, this remains a lovely shot. Sadly it is let down by a rather flat colour and rather noisy grass. If you were to touch this up in photoshop, it can be fixed with a slight gaussian blur on the out of focus grass.

Looking at this piece for a little while now I find that I really love the pensive look on the Snow Leopard's face, I really like that you got such a clear shot of the little cutie and the focus is perfect, draws the attention perfectly to the subject.

The only constructive criticism I can possibly offer for this would be for you to increase the filler light and then up the contrast a bit more, I feel like this is a bit dark for such a cute subject, but let me reiterate that it is a very cute subject and a wonderful shot, Personally I LOVE the ears and the angle at which you go the shot of them, how the hair tufts out of them :).

My ratings are as follows:
Vision 4.5 Because it was a great shot and you really hit the cub at an opportune moment (cub?),
Originality a 4.5, I dont see many baby snow leopard pics and most of the ones I do see are shady, kudos!
Technique I gave a 3.5 just because I believe that theres always room for improvement, I believe that a change in brightness and contrast could definitely enhance this photo, another portion that I thought was kind of disappointing but may have been beyond your control is the shadow, I wish that the facial side of the Snow Leopard had been lit up, but unfortunately you do not rule the sun :P!

As for Impact this also earned a 3.5 just because I feel that this piece would effect me much more if it were more vivid, I feel like my eyes need to absorb it more and the current color scheme doesn't facilitate that :)

Overall this is an A+ photo, as I said I find the fluff of hair coming out of the ears to be my favorite part of the shot and I love the shot overall, there is room for improvement, but with luck no matter how hard we work at our photography, there will always be room for improvement! :)
